Laos's used-car market is not one market. It is a few thousand ads in three currencies, dominated by one brand, mostly in Vientiane, and mostly from the mid-2010s. Knowing that shape tells you where the choice is — and where the gaps are.
Here is what the listings on UL.la actually contained on 14 October 2026.
If you are selling rather than buying, our seller's guide to pricing, photos and paperwork covers that side. This article is the other side of the same market: what a buyer is actually choosing from.
The shape of the market
1,385 vehicles were live on UL.la that day:
- 1,279 cars
- 35 vans
- 27 trucks and pickups
- 25 motorbikes
- 13 spare-parts listings
- 6 bicycles and other vehicles
Where they are matters as much as what they are: 1,309 of the 1,385 are in Vientiane Capital. Savannakhet has 37, Khammouane 14, Luang Prabang 12. Outside the capital you are choosing from a much thinner list, and the trip to Vientiane is part of what a car costs you.
One brand is most of the market
Toyota accounts for 654 ads — close to half of everything live. Behind it: Hyundai 99, Kia 71, Honda 65, Ford 56, Isuzu 52, Mazda 36, Lexus 26, MG 25, Nissan 24.
Model by model, pickups and SUVs lead:
- Toyota Revo — 187 ads
- Toyota Fortuner — 108
- Toyota Prado — 61
- Toyota Vigo — 60
- Toyota Vigo Champ — 59
- Toyota Vios — 43
- Toyota Camry — 38
- Toyota Land Cruiser — 38
- Isuzu D-Max — 36
- Hyundai Elantra — 27
- Ford Ranger — 25
- Honda Civic 21 · Kia Cerato 21 · Honda City 20
If you want a small automatic city car, the choice is real but narrow — the Kia Picanto and Toyota Vios ads are a few dozen, not a few hundred. If you want a 4x4 pickup or a body-on-frame SUV, the market is deep and you can compare ten of them in an afternoon.
Model years: the mid-2010s
Of the 1,128 ads that name a model year, the busiest years are 2015 (102 ads), 2014 (95), 2017 (94), 2013 (83) and 2019 (80). Grouped: 285 ads are 2010–2014 vehicles, 417 are 2015–2019, 372 are 2020 or newer, and 54 are older than 2010. Only 51 ads carry a 2026 or 2027 model year.
That is a used market in the ordinary sense: the average listing is a ten-year-old car, not a two-year-old one. Fine if you plan to keep it, less fine if you expect dealer-grade history on every ad.
Three currencies, no conversion
UL.la shows each ad in the currency the seller chose, and nothing on the site converts between them. On 14 October, 753 vehicle ads were priced in US dollars, 510 in kip and 122 in baht.
Median asking price among the ads that carried one:
- Toyota Revo — USD 38,000 across 79 dollar-priced ads; THB 719,500 across 44; LAK 680,000,000 across 46
- Toyota Fortuner — USD 41,900 across 61; THB 1,330,000 across 17; LAK 350,000,000 across 13
- Toyota Vios — USD 17,800 across 32
- Isuzu D-Max — THB 779,500 across 14
Two things follow. First, when you compare ads, compare inside one currency, or pick the exchange rate yourself at the counter — the baht, dollar and kip ads are not directly comparable as printed. Second, 218 of the 1,385 ads carried no price at all. Those are conversations, not listings.
Read the ad for what it leaves out
Specifications are often blank: 597 vehicle ads state no fuel at all, 411 state no transmission. Where fuel is given, diesel (467) beats petrol (302), with 13 hybrid and 6 electric. Where transmission is given, automatic (729) outweighs manual (158), and 87 ads advertise 4x4.
So the first three questions on any ad are still the plain ones: year, fuel, gearbox. If a listing is silent, ask before you travel.
How to work the list
- Fix the model first. Prado, Fortuner, Revo, D-Max, Ranger and Vigo Champ cover most of the supply; decide which one you want, then look at year and condition.
- Filter by province before you fall in love. Nearly every ad is in Vientiane Capital, so an out-of-province car means a trip.
- Compare in one currency. Dollar, baht and kip ads sit side by side; pick your conversion rate and hold it.
- Treat a missing price as missing information. Ask for the figure and for the papers before you go and see the car.
- Check the plate and the year against the ad text. The photos usually show the plate, and the year is written in most listings.
